Why did you select the TALOSYS temperature monitoring system?
“In the RFP, there were five different categories. There was cost, response to minimum requirements, graphics, visual appeal, ease of use, vendor qualifications, and they ranked first overall. We felt like their support was where we wanted it to be. The other company that we had prior to TALOSYS, we could never get anyone on the phone and now anytime we reach out to TALOSYS we always get responses within 24 hours, if not sooner. So that definitely was a huge plus in our decision to go with them.”
How was the installation handled?
“It was great. We have 42 kitchens and most of our kitchens have one freezer and one cooler. We do have a couple of special circumstances where some of the kitchens have two freezers or two coolers. Install was done within four days.”
How has the service been?
“We’ve been very happy with them. We haven’t had any outages or issues with that. Anytime there is an outage, we get email notifications, all notifications go to my cell phone as a text message. And then other people who are set up within the district have those notifications turned on as well, or text messages. And the company itself also gets alerts whenever there’s issues. So, they’re always made aware where the company we had prior to was not that engaged, which is nice to see.”

What were the circumstances that led you to adopting a temperature monitoring system for your schools?
“We have 88 schools, and we ran into the problem of not knowing when a freezer or a cooler is down. The managers in those individual kitchens weren’t as reliable as we’d like, making sure that we knew when there was equipment failure. So, by having this system we can get a service person there if it needs attention. And there’s been some unintended consequences after purchasing this system that we know when they’re getting food deliveries because their temperatures will go up with the trucks coming in and out of their freezers and coolers. The more information we have, and we can look back and look at the timeline, it gives us useful information for each individual school.”
Had your school district used a temperature monitoring system before?
“One of the departments here at the district has an AC shop and they had put in some type of probe in each of our walk-in coolers and freezers, but their system was not always accessible for us, and it was a little frustrating. We tried for over a year to try and understand their system, but so many times it was down, and it wasn’t reliable. So that’s when we decided to get a system on our own.”
Why did you select the TALOSYS temperature monitoring system?
“Their price was very competitive and a lot of the people I’ve met at our food shows couldn’t touch their price. It always seemed so cost prohibitive, but then when we did the RFP, we got a lot of people outside of the food service arena and it made us realize there’s this technology out there, not just in our arena, and it really is beneficial just having this hardware and the network ability to be able to know what’s going on in each of our kitchens.
The price for the TALOSYS system ended up being quite a bit lower than what we would have paid for one of the temperature monitoring systems that came out of the food service industry. And it’s giving us all the features we need and more.”
How was the installation handled?
“They sent someone here to Charleston. I just drove him to each of our schools, and we hit about 12 a day and went in and put the sensors in the cooler and the freezer. He went in there with the little zip ties, put them where they needed to be, and then we put our gateway devices in all the managers’ offices in each of our kitchens and hooked them up to the network. Each day we had our little route mapped out as to where we were going. It only took us one week and we had all 82 schools installed.”
How has the service been?
“Every time I’ve got a need or a question, I just email my contact, and he responds that day. So, it’s always been wonderful customer service. I think sometimes it’s overwhelming for me, the software part of it. He breaks it down and gives me step by step instructions to make it simpler for me, so he knows how to communicate it to me in a way that I can digest it.”
What are some of the areas where you are getting critical reporting from the system?
“I’m one of five officers and we know, when trucks are in our schools or we know if our employees are leaving doors open or not following good practices and we can address it right away. It’s just giving us a lot more feedback on what’s going on over there without having to go to each school. It’s protecting our equipment and our food.”
